It's the same story at the very top of the 2017 Global Poker Index Player of the Year leaderboard for another week as the latest update keeps Bryn Kenney at No. 1 for a ninth week running. Sitting in second position, Mustapha Kanit has closed the gap a little after notching a cash in a side event at the ongoing PokerStars Championship Macau series.

  • The Global Poker Index was originally created by Federated Sports + Gaming, along with the Epic Poker League(EPL), with Former World Series Of Poker commissioner Jeffrey Pollack acting as the executive chairman, professional poker player Annie Duke as commissioner, and Matt Savage as the League's tournament director.

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. For a look at the entire list, visit the official GPI website. Here's a look at the rankings as of April 5.

There was just one change on Team Canada this week. Sorel Mizzi climbed one spot to No. 7. What hasn't changed is Ari Engel's reign over the Canadians rankings. He has now held the top spot for 23 weeks.

For the annual Canadian Player of the Year race, Ari Engel still leads for the third week now. Sorel Mizzi found a jump from No. 5 to No. 3 from his recent WPT success. The one other change was to see Thomas Lefort fall off the bottom of the list to be replaced by Ryan Yu after he found a cash at PokerStars Championship Macau in the National Championship.

With a bit of shuffling the rest of the top 10 remains largely the same aside from a couple of new entries.

Manig Loeser jumped from No. 18 to No. 8 this week after taking third place in the HK$400,000 Super High Roller at PSC Macau won by Steve O'Dwyer.

Meanwhile Nick Petrangelo has managed two runner-up finsishes in Macau over recent days, one in a 94-entry HK$82,400 NL event and the other in a 50-entry HK$206,000 NL event won by Quan Zhou. Those finishes netted Petrangelo enough points to bound all of the way from No. 98 to No. 10 in the POY standings.

8Steve O'Dwyer3,094.92+10
9Adrian Mateos3,092.63-2
10Ankush Mandavia3,014.76-2

Those two deep runs for Petrangelo mean he's moved back on top of the overall GPI rankings as well, ending the six-week reign of David Peters as leader. Petrangelo returns to No. 1 after having last been on top in February. Most impressively, Petrangelo has been ranked in the GPI top 10 for 85 straight weeks, dating back to August 2015.

A couple of other former GPI leaders made moves as well thanks to success in Macau, namely the aformentioned O'Dwyer (last No. 1 in June 2016) and Fedor Holz (last No. 1 in early January).

O'Dwyer's victory in that PokerStars Championship Macau Super High Roller followed closely on the heels of his victory in the PokerStars Championship Panama High Roller last month, with both wins helping him move up from No. 18 to No. 8. Holz was the runner-up in the Macau SHR at the City of Dreams, helping him go from No. 17 to No. 4.

Eight players moved up enough this week to enter the GPI top 300, with Michael Addamo the highest-ranked of the group. Addamo went all of the way from No. 314 to No. 140 after picking up a big win in that $HK82,400 NL event at PSC Macau in which Petrangelo took second. Addamo is now the second-highest ranked Australian in the GPI rankings behind James Obst (at No. 75).

Global

Marvin Rettenmaier, a former GPI No. 1 (most recently in October 2013), returns to the top 300 this week as well. All of the others on this list are top 300 returnees as well aside from Romain Lewis who is making his top 300 debut at No. 294.

Addamo's upward move represented the biggest gain of anyone in this week's GPI top 300. Both James Chen and Guillaume Diaz used cashes in Macau to manage their moves upward, while Ariel Celestino's scores in Brazil and Panama have helped him back onto the list. And Faraz Jaka is among the many collecting cashes and GPI points in Florida at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown.

Finally, looking only at those still in the GPI top 300, Anthony Gregg endured the steepest drop since last week after going from No. 197 to No. 257.

What to Expect Next Week

Results from the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown series will certainly be reflected in next week's GPI update, as will more from the PokerStars Championship Macau series where the PokerNews live reporting team continues to bring live updates, hand reports, chip counts, photos, videos and more from all of the big events at the City of Dreams.

The United Kingdom Global Poker Index (GPI) is still lead, unsurprisingly, by Stephen Chidwick who has kicked 2020 off in the same style as he ended 2019.

Chidwick recorded a fifth-place finish in the A$25,000 PLO event at the Aussie Millions before finishing second, fourth, and first in a trio of Australian Poker Open events. That last trio banked Chidwick A$669,280.

There’s a new number two, however, with Team partypoker’s Ludovic Geilich climbing up three places since the last time we checked in.

Geilich registered a cash worth $4,500 in the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Mini at Dusk Till Dawn. He also finished 11th in the $10,300 buy-in Main Event, a result that yielded $60,000.

The rest of the top five are similar to earlier in the year. Ben Heath, Jack Salter, and Jack Sinclair occupying third through fifth-place.

You find some new names further down the UK’s leaderboard. Two deep Aussie Millions runs by Benny Glaser see him climb to 11th.

Ben Winsor isn’t too far behind in 14th. Winsor is in incredible form with his last five cashes being a fifth-place, a brace of runner-up finishes and two victories. One of those wins came in the £340 GUKPT London Mini Main Event for £39,920. Winsor when on to finish second in the £1,500 Main Event for an additional £91,270.

These results came only one month after he became the first player in GUKPT history to win two Grand Final tournaments; this latest one saw Winsor haul in £188,610.

Another GUKPT regular, Richard Kellett has entered the UK top 20 for the first time. Kellett is the reigning GUKPT Player of the Year and he took his form to Melbourne where he won the A$2,000 NLHE Bounty event for A$139,725. Kellet finds himself in 17th place in the UK and a career-high 254th in the world.

United Kingdom 2020 GPI Player of the Year Standings (Feb. 27)

Jack Sinclair is the man to catch in the UK GPI Player of the Year race for 2020. Sinclair netted A$172,380 for a sixth-place finish in the A$25,000 $25K Challenge at the Aussie Million, cashed in the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS South America Main Event, and in the recent WPT Germany Main Event in Rozvadov.

The latest leaderboard has a brace of brand new names on it. Artan Dedusha is here courtesy of his victory in the 2020 GUKPT London Main Event that saw him win £137,430 and his 10th place finish in the WPT Germany Main Event worth €24,000.

Chris DaSilva is now in the top 10 after a flying start to the year. Cashes at the GUKPT London festival, the WPTDeepStacks Brussels, and Kings of Tallinn have seen him enter the POY race in seventh.

A trio of solid results in partypoker LIVE MILLIONS events have done Roberto Romanello’s hopes of a Player of the Year title no harm at all. He cashed in both the MILLIONS Mini and MILLIONS Main Event at Dusk Till Dawn, then again in the MILLIONS South America Main Event.
